Three islands — Yanagishima, Matsushima and Shōbu-jima — strung across the middle of the pond and joined by four bridges, so you can walk straight across the water.

The park opened in 1929, modelled on the famous West Lake in Hangzhou, China, and the islands are the clearest echo of that design. From north to south, Yanagishima, Matsushima and Shōbu-jima line up across the pond, with the tiny Kamojima nearby; pines have been planted on the islands since the park opened.

Four bridges link the islands to the north and south shores — among them Kangetsu-bashi, the "moon-viewing bridge", at the north end and Satsuki-bashi in the south-west — so walking across the middle of the pond is both a shortcut and one of the best viewpoints in the park.

Since 2017, LED lights along about 800 metres of the islands' waterside light up the trees and water every evening from 18:00 to 22:00, changing colour with the seasons.
