A statue erected in 2012 that honors members of the Self-Defense Forces, fire department, police, and coast guard who risked their lives to rescue people during the Great East Japan Earthquake, comparing them to "Sakimori," ancient border guards.
This "Monument to the Defenders" was erected on November 4, 2012, as a profound expression of gratitude and respect for the members of the Self-Defense Forces, firefighters, police, and coast guard who worked tirelessly to aid the people affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of March 11, 2011. Many of these heroes lost their own loved ones and colleagues even as they carried out rescue and recovery operations. Drawing a parallel to the ancient "Sakimori" (frontier guards) who once protected the nation's borders, the monument commemorates those who continue to support and protect this country today. It also extends appreciation to international rescue teams and volunteers, including those from the United States military. Crafted by renowned Hakata doll artisan Nobuo Nakamura, the monument stands as a tribute to the courage of those who protect people even amid adversity, and embodies the earnest wish that this beautiful nation will forever remain safeguarded.
