This is southern Kyushu's biggest street party, full stop — somewhere around 20,000 dancers move through downtown Kagoshima to the folk tune "Ohara Bushi," most of them in organized teams from local companies, neighborhoods, and schools, all in matching costumes they've clearly rehearsed for.

It kicks off the evening of Nov 2 and wraps up the following afternoon.

Don't worry if you didn't bring a costume or a dance crew — there's a dedicated drop-in team (tobiiri-ren) that anyone can join, free and unregistered, during set windows on both days.

It starts from the turnaround point on the route, and the city even runs a free crash-course in the choreography the afternoon of Nov 2 for anyone who wants a head start.

Otherwise, it's just as good a festival to watch from the sidelines — taiko drumming by local women's groups and a marching band round out the day.
