Miyazaki Jingū Grand Festival

Known locally as "Jimmu-sama," this is Miyazaki's biggest festival by a mile — over 140 years running — and it's built around Emperor Jimmu, the mythical first emperor of Japan. The whole thing doubles as a harvest celebration, so there's a real "town coming together" energy to it, not just tourists watching from the sidelines.

The main event is the Sacred Procession on Nov 1–2, when portable shrines and elaborately decorated floats wind through the streets from Miyazaki Jingū, carried by people in traditional court dress reenacting Jimmu's legendary journey east. Stick around Nov 1 evening for Jimmu-sama Plaza on Takachiho Street — taiko, lion dances, and a much livelier, more festival-like atmosphere than the daytime ceremony. Local high schoolers even built an app to track the procession live, which is a nice touch.
