Mondeta Lantern Shop is a long-established lantern maker in Hakata founded in 1895, boasting over 130 years of history. The shop hand-crafts all of its lanterns—from those used at shrines and temples to festival lanterns and Obon decorative lanterns—entirely through manual labor and hand-painting. Visitors can experience lantern decoration firsthand at the shop, freely painting their favorite characters or illustrations onto a lantern using paint. Once completed, the lantern is placed in a dedicated box and can be taken home immediately. Since the activity uses paint rather than permanent techniques, even young children can participate, and international visitors are warmly welcomed, with staff communicating through gestures and body language as needed. The entire experience takes approximately one hour.
At the shop, you can experience painting designs directly onto lanterns. You're free to paint your favorite characters or illustrations with paint, finish them into self-standing lanterns, place them in a special box, and take them home with you right away.
Duration is approximately 1 hour
