Kyushu National Museum

Opened on October 16, 2005, as Japan's fourth national museum, following those in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara.

While the other three institutions are art museums, the Kyushu National Museum is a history museum with the concept of "understanding the formation of Japanese culture from an Asian historical perspective."

Approximately 1,300 years ago, Dazaifu was home to the Dazaifu Government Headquarters, known as the "distant court," which served as the center of governance, diplomacy, and defense for Kyushu. The museum was established here against the backdrop of Kyushu's historical role as both a gateway to Asian culture and a strategic defense position.

On the fourth floor, the Cultural Exchange Exhibition Hall features themed displays on the history of exchange between Japan and Asian nations, while the third floor hosts three to four special exhibitions annually.

The first floor houses "Ajippa," a free interactive exhibition space where visitors can learn about Asian culture through play. The museum is located directly behind Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, approximately 5 minutes on foot from Dazaifu Tenmangu.
