An experiential program at "Hakata Sumo Stable" in Shime Town offers Fukuoka's first sumo entertainment show combined with an authentic chanko nabe lunch experience.
Guests first savor a genuine chanko nabe (a sumo wrestler's traditional hot pot featuring pork, mushrooms, cabbage, carrots, green onions, konnyaku, and seasonal variations) supervised by a former professional wrestler, served with fried chicken, salad, rolled omelet, cod roe, and dessert.
Following the meal, the program continues with an illustrated and live-narrated introduction to sumo history, demonstrations of fundamental techniques like shiko (leg stomp), surimashi (sliding footwork), and matanbiraki (leg splits), humorous explanations of forbidden moves including tsuppari (pushing) and keri (kicking), observation of authentic training sessions, and matches conducted according to traditional ritual.
Interested visitors can reserve spots on a first-come basis to don a mawashi (loincloth) and experience an actual bout with professional wrestlers, subject to certain conditions. The program concludes with commemorative photos alongside the wrestlers and an opportunity to purchase sumo-themed souvenirs.
