Kegko Shrine sits at the heart of Tenjin, receiving the reverence of successive lords of Fukuoka Castle from the Kuroda family, with its main hall rebuilt by the third domain lord Kuroda Mitsuyuki after the great fire of 1668 still standing today. The carved animals and birds adorning the eaves of the main hall are also notable attractions.
When Kuroda Nagamasa, the first feudal lord of the Fukuoka Domain, constructed Fukuoka Castle on Fukusaki Mountain, the shrine was temporarily merged with the Kogarasu Shrine in 1601. It was then relocated to its present location in 1608 when a new shrine building was completed.
Following the great fire that swept through the city in October 1668, the shrine was rebuilt under the patronage of Kuroda Mitsuyuki, the third feudal lord. The main hall that stands today preserves the architectural character and dignity of that reconstruction period.
The eaves of the main hall feature intricate wooden carvings of birds and animals throughout, making it well worth a visit to appreciate their craftsmanship.
