A large-scale commercial complex named after the canal flowing through its center, featuring a distinctive circulating design by American architect John Jerde that encourages exploration.
Canal City Hakata, located in Sumiyoshi, Hakata Ward, is a large-scale mixed-use commercial facility that opened in April 1996. It was developed by Fukuoka Chisho, a local real estate company, on the former site of a Kanebo textile factory and swimming pool.
The architectural design was created by American architect Jon Jerde. He is renowned for establishing the concept of commercial facilities as public spaces where people gather and interact.
In Japan, he has also designed Roppongi Hills and Namba Parks. The canal that flows through the center of the facility is the inspiration for its name, and its curved exterior walls and vibrant color scheme create a distinctive space.
The complex houses the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka hotel, a theater, a cinema, as well as numerous shops and restaurants, making it one of Hakata's leading tourist and commercial destinations.
